The position

Geneva is a major centre for commodity trading, and much of that trade still moves on paper: letters of credit, bills of lading, standby guarantees. Our trade finance practice works with traders, shippers and their banks to structure transactions and reduce operational and documentary risk. This role combines advisory work with hands-on document review. You will work closely with our sanctions and customs colleagues, since most trade finance questions touch both areas sooner or later.

Responsibilities

• Structure documentary credits, standby letters of credit and demand guarantees for physical commodity and industrial flows.
• Review presentations against UCP 600, ISBP 821 and URDG 758 and advise on discrepancies.
• Assess borrowing base, pre-export and receivables purchase facilities from the client's side of the table.
• Map trade finance processes and controls, including dual-use and sanctions checks at each step.
• Prepare training material for client trade operations teams.

What the firm looks for

• 6+ years in trade finance at a bank, a trading house or an advisory firm.
• Detailed knowledge of UCP 600, URDG 758, ISBP 821 and Incoterms 2020.
• Experience with physical commodity flows in energy, metals or agricultural products.
• Familiarity with sanctions risk in shipping, including vessel and port screening.
• English at C1 level; French an advantage.

Further advantages

• CDCS or CSDG certification.
• Experience with electronic bills of lading or trade digitisation platforms.
• Knowledge of Swiss export controls administered by SECO.
